Platon Rivellis

Detailed Biographical Note

 

He was born in Athens, Greece in 1945.

He studied Law in Athens (1963-1968), Political Sciences in Paris (1968-1970) and Photography in the USA (1983).

He worked as a lawyer in Athens for twelve years (1971-1983).

He has been teaching Photography since 1981 in various venues.

He has organised the model departments of Photography of the "Laiki Epimorphosi" (Ministry of Education - Adult Educational Programmmes) and taught its instructors.

He has edited a series of programmes on Photography shown on Greek National Television; he also edited many photographic books and curated many exhibitions.

He has delivered numerous seminars and lectures on photography in Athens, Cyprus and elsewhere.

He has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions.

His articles have been published in numerous Greek newspapers and magazines.

He is the Director of the "Photohoros" publications.

He founded in 1988 the "Photography Circle" society, of which he is the President.

He is the author of several books.

 

 

Teaching experience

Platon Rivellis has delivered:

 

1) From 1981 until 1988 seven introductory seminars on Creative Photography at the Studio Quark in Athens.

2) From 1988 until 2002 twenty-eight introductory seminars on Creative Photography at the "Photography Circle" in Athens.

3) From 2003 until 2004 two introductory seminars (seven month duration) on Creative Photography at the "Benaki Museum" in Athens.

4) From 1981 until 1985 the course on Photography (elementary and advanced) at the "University of LaVerne" in Kifissia.

5) From 1992 until 1995 the course on Photography at the "Panteios" Greek University (Mass Media Department).

6) From 1983 until 1987 the course on Photography at the "Moraitis High School" in Athens.

7) From 1987 until 1993 the course on Photography at the "American College" in Athens.

8) From 1988 until 1993 six seminars on Creative Photography for the Adult Educational Programme of the "Athens College".

9) From 1988 until 1992 the course on Creative Photography at the "Focus" school for photography.

10) In 1994 the course on Creative Photography at the "Leica Academy" school for photography.

11) From 1993 until 1996 eight introductory seminars on Creative Photography at the Salonica "Photography Circle".

12) From 1988 until 1991 four advanced seminars on Photography and Criticism at the "Photography Circle" in Athens.

13) From 1992 until 1998 eight advanced seminars on Photography and Criticism on the island of Paros.

14) From 1999 until 2004 five advanced seminars on Photography and Criticism (two week duration) in the island of Syros.

15) From 1985 until 1995 in various towns of Greece twelve seminars for the instructors of the Adult Educational Programme of the "Ministry of Education".

16) From 1990 until 2004 in various towns of Greece ten introductory seminars on Creative Photography.

17) In 1988 he gave a series of lectures on the organisation and teaching of a photography course for the teachers of the "Technical High Schools" of Athens.

18) In 1986 he organised the Photography Department of the "Paremvassis" society (a society for former drug addicts).

19) In 1986 he organised the Photography Department for the Training Centre of the "Athens Children's Hospital".

20) In 1992 he delivered a seminar on Creative Photography to architects (sponsored by the European Union).

21) In 1998 he instructed a Photography seminar for "Christie's" educational courses in Athens.

22) In 1995 he delivered a series of lectures on Photography in the "French Institute of Salonica".

23) From 1985 until 2004 he has delivered more than twenty-five lectures on Photography on various occasions and at various venues in Greece.

24) From 2002-2004 he has delivered in Syros thirty-four seminars focusing on the work of major film directos.

 

Curatorial experience

Platon Rivellis has curated the following photographic exhibitions:

1) From 1984 until 1988 thirty solo exhibitions at the "Photohoros" gallery in Athens.

2) From 1990 until 2003 more than one hundred solo exhibitions at the "Photohoros" gallery in Athens.

3) From 1993 until 1996 twenty-one solo exhibitions at the "Photohoros" gallery in Salonica.

4) In 1989 a group exhibition of the members of the "Photography Circle" held at the National Gallery under the auspices of the Greek Women Scouts.

5) In 1989 a series of exhibitions of Greek photographers held in Montreal.

6) In 1989 (first) and in 1991 (second) group exhibitions of the members of the "Photography Circle" at the "Booze" gallery in Athens within the context of the International Month of Photography in Athens.

7) In 1990 a group exhibition of the members of the "Photography Circle" at the "Transit" gallery in Strasbourg.

8) In 1990 a group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" in Paris with portraits of Greek writers within the context of "Les Belles Etrangères" organised by the French Ministry of Culture.

9) In 1990 (first), in 1992 (second) and in 1994 (third) group exhibitions of members of the "Photography Circle" at the Arts Centre of the Athens City Hall.

10) In 1992 a group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" at the University of Patras.

11) In 1993 (first) and in 1994 (second) group exhibitions of members of the "Photography Circle" in the "Mylos" art centre in Salonica.

12) In 1993 a group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" in the towns of Kalamata, Nafpaktos and Hania.

13) In 1994 a group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" in the town of Karditsa.

14) In 1994 five solo exhibitions and public contest among the audience, "Danaos" cinema, Athens.

15) In 1994 three solo exhibitions at the "French Institute of Salonica".

16) In 1994 a group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" in the town of Stemnitsa.

17) From 1997 until 2003 ten solo exhibitions at the "Diavassis" gallery.

18) In 1998 group exhibitions of Cypriot and Greek photographers in Nicosia (at the "Gate of Famagusta") and in Athens (at the "House of Cyprus").

19) In 1998 a large group exhibition of members of the "Photography Circle" at the "House of Cyprus" in Athens.

20) In 1999 eight solo exhibitions during the "6th International Μonth of Photography" in Athens.

He has also written the Foreword for and contributed some of his photographs to the following collective albums: Photography Circle (Gnossi Publ.), Photography Circle (Greek Centre of Photography Publ.), The Circle, Ten Years, Cyprus, Six Photographic Journeys (Photohoros Publ.) and Athens 2001: Aspects and Views (Photohoros and Benaki Museum Publ.).

 

He has edited and presented thirteen programmes on photography for the Greek National Television (entitled "The Art of Photography") and four programmes for the Greek Educational Television (entitled "About Photography").

 

He has taken part in several round table discussions on Photography (Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros - French Institute of Athens - National Bank of Greece etc.).

 

He is a regular columnist and a Photography critic for the major greek newspaper TA NEA, as well as for the magazine Photographos, a weekly supplement of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini. Several of his articles have been published in reviews such as, Eidolo, Photopolitismos, Aerostato, Minima, Photohoros, Arttime etc.
